Why We Love Bamburgh
There are some places that are beautiful. And then there are places that stop you in your tracks.
For us, Bamburgh is definitely the latter.
Sitting on the Northumberland coast, with its huge stretch of golden sand, dramatic coastline and one of the most recognisable castles in the country, Bamburgh is somewhere that feels special from the moment you arrive.
It's also one of the places that reminds us why we love putting on events in the great outdoors.
The view
Let's start with the obvious one.
Bamburgh Castle.
Standing high above the coastline, the castle is impossible to miss. Whether you're approaching along the coast, catching your first glimpse from the beach or looking back towards it during a run, it provides one seriously impressive backdrop.
It's the kind of view that makes you stop for a second.
And when you're a few miles into a run, that's no bad thing.
The beach
Bamburgh Beach is something else.
Miles of golden sand stretch along the Northumberland coast, backed by dunes and with views across to the Farne Islands on a clear day.
And we're not the only ones who think it's pretty special.
In 2026, Bamburgh was named the UK's best seaside destination by Which? for the sixth year running, topping a survey of 135 coastal destinations. The beach and scenery both received the highest five-star rating.
It has also picked up recognition on the world stage, with Bamburgh Beach ranked No. 3 in Tripadvisor's inaugural 'One of a Kind' list of the world's most unique coastal spots in 2026.
Not bad for a stretch of Northumberland coastline.
But you don't really need an award to understand why.
It's wild, open and expansive.
There's plenty of space to run, walk, explore or simply stand and take it all in.
And while the North East might not always be the first place people think of when they picture spectacular beaches, Bamburgh is a pretty good reminder that you don't need to travel hundreds of miles to find one.
It feels wild
This is probably the biggest reason we love it.
Bamburgh doesn't feel overly polished or manufactured.
The coastline feels open. The landscape is constantly changing with the weather. You can have bright sunshine one minute and a proper Northumberland breeze the next.
There's something raw about running beside the sea with the castle behind you and nothing but coastline stretching into the distance.
It's exactly the kind of landscape we look for when we're planning a Wild Deer event.
There's history everywhere
Bamburgh isn't just about the scenery.
The castle has stood above the coastline for centuries and has played a significant role in the history of Northumberland and the wider North East.
The surrounding coastline is steeped in history too, with Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands just offshore and a landscape that has been shaped by generations of people living alongside the sea.
It gives the area a sense of place.
You're not simply running or cycling through a pretty landscape. You're travelling through somewhere with a story.
A Wild Deer favourite
Bamburgh has become a pretty important part of the Wild Deer calendar.
It's a location we keep coming back to because it works brilliantly for all kinds of challenges.
Our Bamburgh Castle Cycle Sportive takes riders through some of the spectacular roads and landscapes surrounding the castle and Northumberland coast. It's become a firm favourite with riders and sells out every year.
We also bring the Bamburgh Duathlons to the area, combining the challenge of running and cycling with one of the most impressive backdrops in the North East.
And for 2027, we're adding something new.
The Bamburgh Trail Run.
A brand-new trail running event that will give runners the chance to experience this incredible coastline on foot.
It's another way to explore somewhere we love – and we can't wait to see runners taking on the trails around Bamburgh.
Where some big adventures begin
Bamburgh isn't only a destination in its own right.
For us, it's also the starting point for some seriously big Wild Deer adventures.
It's the beginning of The Kingdom of Northumbria Coastal Ultra, a journey through the incredible landscapes of the Northumberland coast and beyond.
And it's also where runners begin The Priory, our 100km ultra taking you across the North East from one iconic landmark to another.
There's something fitting about starting these huge challenges in a place like Bamburgh.
You stand beneath the castle, look out towards the coast and know you've got a long way to go.
It's made for exploring
One of our favourite things about Bamburgh is that you don't really need a reason to explore it.
You can head along the beach.
Follow the coastal paths.
Explore the village.
Walk towards the castle.
Jump on your bike and head into the surrounding countryside.
Or simply find a quiet spot and watch the waves.
And if you happen to be doing all of that while taking on a Wild Deer event, even better.
From Bamburgh to the North East
Bamburgh is part of what makes the North East such an incredible place to explore.
Within a relatively small area, you've got dramatic coastline, beaches, castles, forests, hills and huge open landscapes.
It's one of the reasons we're so passionate about creating events here.
We want to show people what's on our doorstep.
And we want to create events that don't just give you a finish time – they give you a reason to discover somewhere new.
A place worth coming back to
The thing about Bamburgh is that it never really feels the same twice.
The weather changes.
The light changes.
The tide changes.
The landscape changes.
And somehow, every visit feels a little different.
That's what we love about it.
It's beautiful on a sunny summer afternoon, dramatic on a windy autumn morning and pretty spectacular when the Northumberland coastline is covered in winter light.
Whatever the season, Bamburgh delivers.
